Concordia University — Construction of the Research Laboratory on Future Buildings
An apparent wood frame in a university environment

In any project where the frame is visible, the close collaboration between the architect and the structural engineer is essential for the final result to be a success. The development of aesthetic connections in the exposed wood frame and the design of thermal breaks to meet the requirements of the project were the two notable elements from the point of view of the structural engineer. It may also be noted that to limit excavation and the volume of concrete, this building was built on a floating slab, rather than on conventional foundation walls.
